Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
One of the most common breast procedures is a mastopexy, or breast lift, which is performed to reshape and lift breasts that have sagged as a result of pregnancy, aging, weight loss, gravity, or other causes. Patients can achieve a lifted breast contour by trimming excess skin and tightening supportive breast tissue. Following a breast lift, the breasts sit higher on the chest and feel firmer. During the procedure, the nipple and areola can be repositioned or resized in order to further improve the appearance of the breasts.
Many patients choose to combine a breast lift procedure with an augmentation or reduction in order to achieve optimal results, since a breast lift does not change the fullness or shape of the breasts.

Candidates for Breast Lift
For women looking to enhance the appearance of their sagging breasts, a breast lift is a safe and effective procedure, though there are some restrictions on eligibility. The best candidates for a breast lift are women who:
- Drooping breasts
- Breasts that have lack volume or shape
- Flat or elongated breasts that Nipples or areolas that point downward
- Asymmetrical breasts
It is important for breast lift candidates to be in good overall health, have realistic expectations for surgery, and maintain a stable weight. Women who are planning to have children are recommended to postpone this procedure since pregnancy and nursing can offset the effects of a breast lift.
Breast Lift Procedure
Breast lifts usually take between one and three hours, and are performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will decide upon an appropriate incision approach for your procedure, depending on the degree of sagging, amount of excess skin, size and shape of the breasts.
Types of incisions include:
- Two doughnut-shaped rings around the areola in a doughnut shape, which is and ideal procedure for women with small breasts who want minimal scarring.
- Incision around the areola and down to the breast crease to create the shape of a lollipop
- A lollipop shape with another incision along the crease of the breast for an anchor shape. This incision is ideal for breasts with considerable sagging
Following the incision, tissue of the breast is removed and reshaped to achieve the desired breast contour. The nipple and areola may be resized or moved higher on the breast as well. Finally, excess skin is removed to create a more defined, tighter appearance. Following the surgery, the incisions are closed with stitches, and tend to heal well.
