Men and women who are unhappy with the size and shape of their lower legs are great candidates for calf implant surgery. Calf implants are also used to correct deformities resulting from injury or nerve diseases that result in muscle deterioration, includining Polio, club foot and spina bifida.
Calf Implant Surgery is performed under general anesthesia with the patient placed on their stomach. An incision is made in the crease behind the knee, and the surgeon creates a pocket in the calf muscle into which a silicone implant is carefully inserted and position. The incision is then closed with sutures. Calf implant surgery normally takes between one and two hours.
Recovery occurs over a 2-3 week period, during which the leg muscles adapt to the implant, the skin stretches and walking normally gradually becomes easier. The patient will need to sleep with their legs elevated for the first few nights to minimize swelling.
